NAME: Rise Kujikawa
AGE: 17
CANON: Persona 4
CANON POINT: Post-games, including epilogues of P4G, P4D, and P4 Arena Ultimax)
CRAU: Kinda, she'll have her memories from being here before?
OTHER: N/A
SUITABILITY: Of the four heroines of Persona 4, Rise is easily the most in-tune with her body and her sexuality. As a performer and an idol (going with the stage name Risette), she's been the subject of desire even as a young woman - and while there are certainly aspects of it that are upsetting or fans who take it too far, Rise is overall fairly comfortable with doing things like filming ads in a bikini or having photobooks published of her.
In Persona 4, those who are thrown into the world inside the TV manifest Shadows, a form representing repressed or unacknowledged feelings. Rise's Shadow is foremost an expression of her oversexualized nature as a teen idol - her Shadow promises "lucky viewers" that she's ready to bare it all, her dungeon is a strip club, and the Shadow blossoms into a grotesque faceless stripper for the boss fight.
Rise's Shadow isn't all about her sexuality, though; it's also about the masks she wears and her fear that in putting on the mask of the singer, the actor, the sex object, the starlet, she's losing her "real self."
While Rise initially rejects both of these things, the point of a Shadow is that they are unacknowledged and repressed but very real emotions, and she comes to terms with them over time. Her individual plot in the game is about accepting that her identity as Risette - which includes being sexualized, appealing to a fan gaze - is just as much a real part of her as the girl who works in her grandparents' tofu shop in a sleepy country town. In the dancing game sequel set several months after the close of P4, she's indeed back to performing and wearing flashy and sometimes-revealing outfits.
Even aside from her role as a performer, Rise is both the most outwardly romantic of the Persona 4 heroines, flirting with the protagonist at nearly every opportunity, as well as, again, the most comfortable with her body and sexuality. She freely admits with little shame that her official published measurements are exaggerated. She's the most hands-on, touchy-feely member of the party (just ask poor Naoto, who really didn't expect how Rise would react to learning that she's concealing a surprising figure with how she dresses).
Rise is still a young woman, still a teenager who is finding herself, and she did only lose her virginity the first time she was at GP, but given that she's already in canon demonstrated an understanding of and comfort with her sexuality, she should be more than appropriate for the game.
HISTORY: Rise Kujikawa starts off Persona 4 far from the sleepy country town of Inaba. She's a pop idol, a glamorous star who has fans of all ages, who shows up on TV, who has photo books published, and more. She has nothing to do with the murder mystery rocking Inaba, where people who appear on the mysterious Midnight Channel go missing.
Until she gets burned out from show biz and takes a hiatus, going to live with her grandparents... who run a tofu store in the sleepy country town of Inaba. And she shows up on the Midnight Channel. And then she goes missing.
The Investigation Team rescues her from the world inside the TV, which manifests its victims' insecurities and repressed thoughts - hers taking the form of a giant stripper. In doing so, Rise awakens her own Persona and joins the team as their navigator, becoming an invaluable member of the party who helps them foil the mystery, catch the culprit, and learn the truth behind the Midnight Channel.
In the process, she comes to term with her issues with showbiz, and decides to make a return, which she's succeeded in by the following spinoffs. By the time of Persona 5 (some years later), Rise Kujikawa - no longer Risette - has her newest album release plastered all over Tokyo, so she's clearly succeeded in this!
ABILITIES: ise's non-superhuman abilities mainly revolve around her career as an idol - she's shown to be a skilled dancer and singer, and it's mentioned that her agency wants to get her some work as an actress because they think she has promise there as well. She's observant and good at reading people.
When she awakens her Persona, Himiko, she becomes the group's navigator, helping them fight through the dungeons of the Midnight Channel and explore the world inside the TV. She can also use Himiko to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of their various enemies, and as she grows more comfortable with the power of her Persona (and Himiko's ascended versions, Kanzeon and Kouzeon) she gains the ability to help boost her teammates' power.
Rise has very little in the way of combat capability, but she's a vital support member of the party.
VICES: Attention-Seeking and Insecurity: Despite her fame and fans, Rise struggles with insecurity. She invented her Risette persona while a friendless child to become more popular, and as a result, during the entirety of her career in show business, worried that people were liking her stage character, not her. Rise can be overly dramatic or act out to become the center of attention.
One could argue that her insecurity itself is a fairly significant flaw in its own right. We see multiple times during the Persona 4 games that while Rise is proud of her appearance and her figure, she's a "big fish in a small pond" in the context of the sleepy country town of Inaba, and the moment someone outshines her - the boyish Naoto secretly having a larger chest, or her idol rival Kanami developing a much curvier figure - she expresses jealousy and gets snappy.
Rise, on a fundamental level, is concerned with how she is perceived. She has a deep-seated desire to be seen as mature; while she is a perfectly competent cook on a technical level, her dishes are nearly inedibly spicy because she thinks that "eating spicy food" is a symbol of adulthood. She has a strong desire for validation and approval from others - and this is closely related to one of her strong virtues, her empathy. She wants to be lots of things for lots of people, which is at the core of the insecurity her Shadow manifests.
The House could manipulate this side of her by offering her fame, the ability to show off or to stand out, highlighting her maturity, and so on. She's pretty vulnerable to being praised and acclaimed, so that would be a good way to lure her into sin and debauchery. Tell her how much of a good girl she is :V
Impulsiveness: While Rise is a fairly empathic and aware person, her nature is much like the food she cooks - a little too hot. She nearly throws away her entire career rather than trying to work with her agent to find a sustainable way forward to deal with her burnout, and her barbs towards Naoto wind up (apparently) convincing Naoto to sacrifice herself as the serial killer's next victim, for which Rise blames herself. More than being impulsive, Rise can be very stubborn - of all of the P4 hero's love interests, she is the only one to flirt with him even if they aren't officially dating.
Rise's hotheadedness and tendency to rush to snap-action rather than think things over makes her incredibly vulnerable to manipulation by the house. Something that is too good to be true might trap her before she has a moment to think about it. Alternatively, playing to her mercurial nature and getting her to behave rashly and recklessly would be a great way to tempt her.
There's something that we're also going to talk about in the Virtues section but which also applies here:
Cheerfulness and Vivaciousness: Rise is the life of the party. She's one of the most upbeat members of the party, and as an idol, she's learned how to stay shining wherever possible. She's positive, cheerful, and knows how to have a good time. ...and this also winds up being a bit of a flaw, as it means she likes partying. Sure, there's no alcohol in the drinks when they're playing King's Game, but she doesn't know that; she thinks she's getting drunk and crossing lines and behaves accordingly. Her need to have fun and be a good time (again, see the first entry - how she's percieved) means she might be more likely to get intoxicated and lose her inhibitions.
VIRTUES: Empathy and Understanding: Rise is highly empathetic, often picking up on the feelings and needs of those around her - these are the same qualities that made her such a good idol, because she was able to read her fans and the audience. This ability extends beyond mere social intuition; it is also reflected in her Persona abilities as the navigator. Her empathetic nature makes her a compassionate friend - and not wanting to let her fans down is one of the reasons she kept being a performer even after being Risette for too long exhausted her.
This, at least, is a bit of a tempering influence to her hotheadedness, because while she can be mercurial or selfish in a moment, it doesn't take her that many more moments to start realizing how she's making other people feel. Knowing that her friends might be worried about her would be a great anchor at pulling her back from the brink, and she'll ultimately be extremely reluctant to ever knowingly hurt someone else, so the House would struggle to have her be a tempting force on someone else.
Positivity and Resiliency: As mentioned above, Rise is the emotional uplifter of the party, and her spirits are very hard to break. The positive side of her cheerful life-of-the-party demeanor, while it might make her prey to falling into intoxication or other such things, is that she's simply hard to break.
Rise is an exceptionally hard worker, which the player only comes to understand upon progressing her social link (character plot story). While younger, she'd been all but friendless and so invented her Risette personality in the hopes of being more popular - only to have it work too well, leading to stress and burnout. While she does wind up taking a break from showbiz due to it and nearly torpedoing her career completely, she demonstrates resilience through the events of the game - like being kidnapped and nearly killed - and manages a return after the game's end as seen by her having posters advertising a new album in Persona 5.
The House is highly unlikely to wear her down over time, because she's stubborn and determined and very good at trying to tough things out. So, no matter how bad things get, she'll never lose sight of the things that make her herself.
SUIT REQUESTS: Last time, Rise was a Heart, and that's still definitely the suit that best applies to her. She's an emotional girl who wears her heart on her sleeve, she's dramatic and jealous and a little sensitive and very affectionate. She falls for the P4 protagonist within weeks of meeting him, and in general lives life as an affectionate, vivacious person who is both in touch with her emotions but hardly a master of them. With Hearts, this time, I think I would want to play out more of her tendency to fixate on people she's interested in, her jealousy and possessiveness. (Honestly I would absolutely love to do a threesome thread with her, her love object, and a third and play out how that happens as she gets jealous and competitive, but those are really complicated to wrangle). Obviously this would only be with the permissions of everyone involved!
The other thing that would fit her the most is Diamond. She's a very physical person as a dancer and someone whose body is a sex object, and it kind of ties in with her personality traits mentioned above in Hearts. Wanting her to be insatiable and just get railed over and over again would be a fun thing I haven't ever gotten to play with her. I also love the idea that she's just so hypersensitive to touch and maybe orgasms from like, a shoulder rub or something? (But obviously it doesn't fully satisfy her, so, ~you know what happens next~).
While those two are definitely the top two, I think there's also an argument for Clubs? Rise isn't a highly intellectual character, but as the group navigator sensory things and perception are really important to her, and being able to break her certainty in her Persona abilities - like through hallucinations or delusions - could be really interesting? It's still probably third on my list but I'd definitely have fun if that's how it sorts out!
RANK REQUESTS: She was a 4 last time, and *she* would love to be a higher rank this time, whereas I am fine wherever the dice wind up for her~
